Facebook Custom Email List Opportunitites

May 19, 2013
facebook custom email lists

Many advertisers / email marketeers face a common problem. How to reach out to the people who doesn’t open your mails at all ? Some of them might be your existing customers or subscribers. So obvious that they are potential audience to remarket. If you have their phone number, you might want to call them. But this looks like a task when such a list is too big to call individually.

The strength of Facebook advertising is the possibilities of granular demographic targeting which allows you to reach out to the people based on their public profile info. We can advertise to men who are engaged, who live in particular city, belong to certain age group and who are interested (Facebook Interest clusters) in certain things. Now facebook has gone a step further with its custom audience list targeting option. Facebook Custom audience list lets you upload a list of email ID’s to whom you want to show ads, promoted posts or sponsored stories.

Custom audience list is a great solution to reach out to the people who doesn’t open your mails. They can see your ad on facebook and thus can be engaged. Many advertisers prefer to go for promoted posts rather than stamp ads (Icon Ads on the right sidebar) for their higher visibility and click through. Which sounds like a right way to do it. Though few will face some issues with it.

Consider a scenario, where you want to show promoted post only to a list of email ID’s. To do a promoted post, you will first have to post that on your page and then use that post to promote from facebook advertising panel to the custom email list. There is no way to directly create a promoted post directly from the fb advertising panel. First you need to post it on the page. When you post that on the page, all your active fans will see that message. Even is you chose to target that post only to small audience of 50 people, anyone who visits your page’s timeline will see that post, doesnt matter to whom you just wanted to show it.  If you hide that post, then it wont be available to promote in the facebook advertising panel anymore. This looks like a serious problem when you dont want to show that post to anyone except the people in the email list. Facebook can solve this problem by allowing to create a post directly from the panel  just like it allows to create other form of Facebook ads (Stamp-ads)

This was the part one of the problem. Now consider a scenario where you are an online retailer and you want to show unique coupon codes in post text to the custom list of email ID’s. This option is available mostly with Email service providers which allows you to use custom fields in the email -subject, body or copy for personalisation.  For Eg. you may use mail chimp merge tags to customize your email with name and a unique coupon code for every email id.

Hey, Addy

Hope you have been doing good. We have a surprise for you.

You 20% off coupon code is

ABC7575848

Shop NOW!

So mail chimp or any other good email service provider will allow you to enter custom fields for NAME , coupon code, or any other custom text or link for each email ID. While uploading a list of email ID’s in excel you just need to add in the column of NAME and Coupon code for email system to pick those fields. So when  we want to take the same approach with facebook custom email list audience, this is not possible. Right now facebook only accepts email ID’s to be uploaded and no custom fields. You have no other option but to use the common coupon code  or same text for everyone who is in that email List. No facebook, doesnt allow personalization yet

I am sure facebook  will soon allow with such options where the advertisers will be able to use custom lists to full potential.  If you have know any other way to reach out to people who doesn’t open the emails, please share below.

What is the simplest way to freeze your niche Brand communication strategy?

Create a persona of your core audience type  in your mind and adopt to her tonality in your communication.

For Eg. Persona for a Brand selling lifestyle products to young girls in India:-

  • She is an Indian
  • She is unique in her own way.
  • She is not influenced
  • She is her own favrt
  • She creates her own way and her own class
  • She had a serious broke up at young age :p
  • Age Bracket – 20-32
  • In Metros
  • Ofcourse she loves to shop :p

Once you have a clear picture of this character, you will have a better idea of what kind of communication will go well with that.

To Do: To make a loyal customers community to share the fun for being free-spirited, un-influenced and I am my own best mindsets.

Insight: We know to be favorite and to be independent is the most idealistic thing to do but it takes lots of efforts, sweat, and time to do.

Solution: Make ”to be a apni favourite hoon” a fun process and a journey.  Let customers to live their own house that we together created.

What is incentive for them to join/register that house?

  1. Access to surprising discounts on the products they have browsed through already and Favorited (Tagged) on the website.
  2. An invitation to attend the Brand House party. Each month, the company will send five lucky attendees free products to try and review.
  3. An ‘dream profile’ where the company will ask users questions about their ambition and dream style of carrying them with that ambition.  In return, store will suggest products, looks and content based on their preferences.
  4. Private/conffesion room area which will discounts for the best confessions made.
  5. The latest launch news offers, exclusive contests, monthly emails and direct mail pieces and free samples exclusively for those registered via Facebook.
